Independent scaffolds are a popular structure for construction projects in and around London. Unlike standard scaffolding, it doesn’t require attachment to the building’s walls, as independent scaffolds are freestanding structures which rely on double-bracing for stability.
Independent scaffolding is suitable for residential, commercial, and construction projects. It provides safe access platforms ideal for light work, including painting, decorating, inspections, rendering, repointing, cleaning, and cladding, where the scaffolding tubes sit back from the wall and won’t impede your work.
Independent scaffolding is designed to stand freely, not relying on the building structure for support. It consists of two rows of vertical standards connected to horizontal ledgers, stabilised using double bracing: this forms a self-supporting structure with the scaffolding tubes set back from the wall, ensuring unobstructed working areas. This makes it versatile for various applications for light-duty tasks such as painting, decorating, inspections, rendering, repointing, cleaning, and cladding.
There is no fixed price, as the cost of an independent scaffold will vary depending on:
Once this information is provided, we can offer a detailed estimate. For reference, you will typically pay between £15-£50 per metre, depending on the structure’s height. However, the higher we go, the longer the scaffold takes to erect, the more the cost will increase.
*Please note the above costs are just a guide*
Two rows of vertical standards (upright tubes) are anchored to the ground. The initial row is installed at a distance of 20 to 30 centimetres from the wall, and the second row is positioned approximately 1.5 meters away. Horizontal (ledger tubes) connect to the standards (uprights), and transoms and double cross-bracing are added to the structure, significantly enhancing the scaffolding’s rigidity and load-bearing capacity.
Independent scaffolds are flexible and can adapt to diverse building configurations and site conditions.
Flexibility: Suitable for various building types and structures.
Safety: Offers a safe and controlled working platform for users.
Efficiency: Can be rapidly assembled and disassembled.
Freestanding: The tubes do not touch the walls, as cross braces are installed to keep the structure sturdy.
Independent scaffolding may not be appropriate for:
This structure can also be known as a free-standing, double scaffold and painter’s scaffold.
Independent scaffolding systems are available in several configurations, each optimised for specific applications and providing distinct levels of access and support. Below are two examples:
Birdcage scaffolds: A type of independent scaffolding designed explicitly for interior work, such as accessing ceilings and soffits or for fall prevention.
Cantilever scaffold: Extends from structures to provide access to otherwise inaccessible locations.
Several factors must be considered when erecting and using independent scaffolding to ensure safety; these include:
Adhering to the above will ensure accidents are kept to a minimum.
