We recently completed scaffolding at a residential property on Park Road, Surbiton, providing safe access to the rear party wall of a two-storey house. The scaffold was required to allow contractors to carry out works at height safely while maintaining reliable access throughout the project.
Although the scaffold design itself was relatively straightforward, the property presented some access restrictions that required additional planning before installation could begin.
Our team supplied and erected a 2.4-metre-wide tower scaffold, reaching a height of around 7.0 metres. The scaffold was constructed with three lifts providing a stable access solution to the rear party wall.
The structure incorporated a boarded access lift and a fully boarded working lift, allowing operatives to safely reach and work on the required area of the building. A fixed ladder was installed within the scaffold, providing a secure means of moving between lifts.
To ensure compliance with current safety requirements, the scaffold was fitted with a safety ladder gate, along with double guardrails and toe boards on both boarded lifts to provide effective edge protection throughout the hire period.
Access to the rear garden was restricted, with no direct route available through the property. As a result, all scaffold materials had to be transferred over a single-storey roof before being passed down into the rear garden for erection. This required careful coordination from our specialist London scaffolding erectors, with scaffold tubes, boards, and fittings all being manually handled into position before construction of the scaffold could begin. By planning the installation method, we were able to complete the work safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to the property.
Once the materials had been transferred into the rear garden, our scaffolders erected the tower scaffold to the required height and configuration.
The boarded access lift provided a safe route through the scaffold to the upper working lift, where contractors could carry out their work on the party wall. The seven-board-wide platform provided ample space for operatives, tools and materials, helping to maintain safe working conditions while work was undertaken at height.
Throughout the installation, particular attention was given to ensuring the scaffold remained secure, stable and fully compliant with current working-at-height requirements. Following completion, the scaffold was inspected and handed over, ready for immediate use.
Project Details
The completed scaffold provided safe and reliable access to the rear party wall, enabling the contractor’s works to be carried out efficiently over the four-week hire period.
Despite the restricted access arrangements, the project was completed without issue, demonstrating the importance of careful planning and experienced installation teams when working on residential properties with limited access. The finished scaffold provided a safe working platform, secure access between lifts, and the necessary fall protection for work at height.
For another example of how we adapt our scaffolding to suit different site layouts, take a look at our window access scaffolding project in Merton, SW19, where we erected a bespoke scaffold incorporating an 8-metre beamed section to safely span a lower roof and provide secure access for roller shutter installation.
