Signage scaffold, Sainsbury's, Upper Norwood, SE19

Project type:  Scaffold to access signage.

Site location: Sainsbury’s, Westow Road, Upper Norwood, London, SE19.

Customer needs: We were asked to provide a quotation to supply, erect and dismantle a single lift scaffolding structure to the front of a Sainsbury’s store in Upper Norwood, London, SE19. This scaffold was needed to provide access to the sign for removal. Our scaffolding price included a 4-week hire period. We also applied for a pavement licence from the local council on behalf of the customer.

Obstacles and challenges we needed to resolve: This structure was directly in front of a busy store, so our scaffold erectors were required to put this scaffolding up out of hours to ensure the general public’s safety.

What we accomplished:

  • Our scaffolders erected a scaffold directly underneath the “Sainsbury’s” sign that measured approximately 8 metres wide by 1.8 metres high.
  • A single lift of scaffolding was installed at the roof line of this building.
  • This scaffold structure was fully boarded but was only 4 scaffold boards deep due to a lack of space.
  • Ladder access was supplied but not fixed to the structure to prevent anyone from trying to climb up the ladder.
  • A hi-visibility metal stair gate was installed on the right-hand side of the scaffold.
  • We used 1.5-metre tubes with 2ft butts (shorter length tubes) to create box ties around the ground-level steel pillars to ensure the scaffold was completely stable as we were unable to brace this structure to prevent the public from injuring themselves.
  • All baseplates were put in yellow plastic tredda plates for public safety.

Length of hire: The quotation we provided this customer included our standard rental period of 4 weeks. The pavement licence was also for 4 weeks.
